Copper Hits a Record as Buyers Stockpile Ahead of Possible U.S. Tariffs

A metal with two demand stories
Copper reached a record on the London Metal Exchange and is up about 16% year to date. Freeport-McMoRan and Southern Copper are both sharply higher over the same stretch.
Traders point to U.S. buyers stockpiling ahead of possible import tariffs and to structural demand from power grids and AI data centers.
Tariffs first, kilowatts second
A stockpile trade can reverse if the tariff threat fades. Grid and data-center demand is slower to unwind. The record price mixes both, which is why miners rallied even while chip stocks sold off on AI-safety headlines.
What breaks the rally
A clear tariff decision, a growth scare in China, or a pause in data-center orders. Until one of those arrives, physical buyers are paying up for metal they would rather hold than chase later.
