Earth Day and climate summits usually focus on saving lush rainforests or melting glaciers, but a major international movement has turned its attention to a different ecosystem: the rangelands. These are the vast, dry grasslands and savannahs that cover over half of the earth's surface.
The United Nations has officially put the spotlight on these areas due to the rapid acceleration of desertification and drought. Because of changing weather patterns and unsustainable land use, millions of acres of fertile grassland are turning into barren desert every single year.
This is a massive crisis because rangelands are the literal life support system for billions of people and livestock, particularly traditional herders and pastoralists. When these grasslands dry up, it destroys local food sources, drives wildlife toward extinction, and forces entire communities to migrate, creating massive humanitarian challenges.
Governments and conservation groups are launching massive restoration projects from South America to Africa. By implementing better grazing management and restoring native plants, they can stop the desert from expanding. Protecting these dry spaces is now recognized as a critical battleground for global food security.
