In the face of profound loss, finding the strength to move forward is a challenge; finding the strength to lift an entire community is a triumph. For Mary Nelson, the journey began not with a business plan, but with a heartbeat for her neighborhood and a desire to heal. Following a devastating family tragedy, she channeled her grief into action, creating a sanctuary for youth and families in need of support, resources, and hope.
Today, the Mary Nelson Youth & Resource Center stands as a pillar of resilience. It is an organization built on the belief that fighting poverty isn’t just about financial aid—it’s about education, connection, and maximizing every available resource. We sat down with the founder to discuss her journey from personal loss to non-profit leadership, the challenges of sustaining a volunteer-driven mission, and her ambitious vision for the future.

Legend Magazine: How did you get started in your career?
Mary Nelson: To be honest, I had just lost my nephew to gun violence. At the time, I hadn't yet considered the greater purpose that lay ahead for me. Twenty-five years later, I am leading a non-profit that has touched countless lives. I am now looking to expand the center to include an indoor event center with transitional living space for our homeless youth.
LM: Many successful businesses prioritize innovation and creativity. How does your company foster a culture of innovation, and what steps do you take to encourage creative thinking among your team members?
MN: We are a resource agency, and we feel strongly that fighting poverty is not always about money; it is about educating our community on the resources that are there to help the family. Our innovation comes from connecting people to solutions they didn't know existed.
LM: What measures have you taken to ensure the safety of your employees and customers, and how have these measures impacted your operations?
MN: As we are a non-profit, we work very closely with our sponsors. I still work a full-time job—I have been with my employer for nearly 28 years as of next February. Everyone at the center is a volunteer. This structure helped us maintain stability when others faced harder transitions.

LM: One of the biggest challenges facing businesses today is keeping up with rapidly evolving technology. How do you stay up-to-date with the latest technological advances, and how do you determine which technologies are worth investing in?
MN: I just received sponsorship to upgrade our youth classroom. In the era we are in, youth are naturally magnetized toward electronics. Many of them are very talented. We just purchased a gaming system, but it isn't just for games; it is a tool for creativity and engagement.
LM: What are some of the biggest challenges you have faced in your career pursuit and how have you overcome them?
MN: Financially, it is challenging at times. This is the reason I still work my other job—to help with our operational expenses. It requires dedication, but it ensures we can keep our doors open.
LM: With the growing importance of sustainability, many businesses are looking for ways to reduce their environmental impact. What initiatives has your company undertaken to become more environmentally friendly?
MN: The Mary Nelson Youth & Resource Center takes what we have and tries to make a difference. We focus on being resourceful and wasting nothing.
LM: Tell us a story about a time when you felt like giving up.
MN: I started our Annual School Supply giveaway when I lost my nephew in 2002. Twelve years later, my brother was killed in the same manner—gun violence. Three years after losing my brother, I lost my sister. With all this happening, I just felt lost and wondered what my purpose was. After taking time to reflect and search for inner guidance, I eventually felt a sense of peace. That peace allowed me to keep going.
LM: Research suggests that successful entrepreneurs often have a unique approach to risk-taking. What's the biggest risk you've taken in your business, and what did you learn from the experience?
MN: I don't view it as a risk; I have always made conscious decisions when it came to the center. I just truly love where I am and the path I am on.
LM: What's the mission and purpose of your business, and how do you ensure that everyone in your organization is aligned with it?
MN: Our mission sums up to one thing: Think of others how you want others to think of you. I have never allowed my circumstances to become a negative consequence for those we serve.
LM: What are some of the latest products, services, and programs you are offering in 2026? How are your services helping people achieve success?
MN: Our main goal for 2026 is to be able to expand the center so we can provide more resources within our community. We are focused on growth that directly impacts the daily lives of the families we serve.
A Vision for Tomorrow
Mary Nelson’s story is a powerful reminder that purpose often arises from the ashes of adversity. Her refusal to let tragedy define her—choosing instead to define herself by her service to others—has created a legacy that resonates throughout her city.
As the Mary Nelson Youth & Resource Center looks toward 2026, the goal is clear: expansion. By adding transitional living spaces for homeless youth, the center is poised to offer not just resources, but a true home for those who need it most. It is a testament to the power of community, the strength of volunteers, and the enduring impact of one woman’s determination to turn pain into peace.
