Tragedy struck Evergreen High School in Evergreen, Colorado, today as a shooting on campus left two students critically injured and a third—the suspected shooter—hospitalized in serious condition. The incident unfolded just after 12:24 p.m. local time, prompting a full lockdown and a massive law enforcement response.
Authorities say the shooting occurred outside the school building, though investigators are still combing through classrooms and hallways to determine whether additional crime scenes exist. More than 100 officers, including state troopers and federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, responded to the scene, clearing the school room by room.
The suspect, believed to be a student at Evergreen High, was apprehended and is currently being treated at St. Anthony’s Hospital. Officials have not confirmed how the suspect was injured, but initial reports suggest law enforcement did not fire any rounds during the arrest. A search warrant is being prepared for the suspect’s home as part of the ongoing investigation.
The two victims, both students, suffered gunshot wounds and remain in critical condition. Their identities have not been released. Hospital CEO Kevin Cullinan confirmed that no additional injuries have been reported at this time.
“This is the scariest thing you could ever think could happen,” said Jacki Kelley, spokesperson for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department. “These parents were terrified, and so were the kids. We always say ‘not again,’ and yet here we are.”
Governor Jared Polis issued a statement condemning the violence and calling for renewed efforts to ensure school safety. “Students should be able to attend school safely and without fear across our state and nation,” he said.
Evergreen High School, located roughly 28 miles southwest of Denver, serves over 900 students. All classes and activities have been suspended until further notice.
This marks the 47th school shooting in the United States this year, underscoring a grim trend that continues to plague educational institutions nationwide. Investigators are now interviewing students and staff to piece together the events leading up to the attack.
As the community grapples with the trauma, officials are urging anyone with information to come forward. The school district has activated crisis counseling services for students, families, and staff affected by the incident.
