Israel's recent decision to officially recognize the breakaway region of Somaliland has triggered a severe diplomatic backlash across the Horn of Africa. The move, intended to secure a strategic foothold near the Red Sea's Bab al-Mandab Strait, has infuriated the central government of Somalia in Mogadishu, which views Somaliland as an integral part of its territory. On Friday, mass rallies were held in Mogadishu denouncing the recognition, and the Somali government has threatened to sever all remaining informal ties with nations that follow Israel's lead.

Geopolitical analysts argue that the move may have backfired for Israel, as it has strengthened the resolve of resistance movements and unified various Somali factions against external interference. The recognition is also causing friction with other regional powers like Egypt and Turkey, who support Somalia's territorial integrity. The situation underscores the fragility of the region, where local secessionist ambitions are increasingly being exploited as leverage in broader international power struggles.
