Tensions in the Caribbean have spiked as US military forces seized a sixth oil tanker, the Veronica, which officials allege was operating in defiance of sanctions against Venezuela. The operation, conducted by US Marines and sailors launched from the USS Gerald R. Ford in coordination with the Coast Guard, took place early Thursday morning. The Department of Homeland Security stated that the vessel was part of a "ghost fleet" attempting to bypass the US-imposed quarantine on Venezuelan oil exports. This seizure is the latest in a series of aggressive enforcement actions taken by the administration to clamp down on the financial lifelines of the Venezuelan government following recent political upheavals in Caracas.
The seizure comes at a critical diplomatic moment, coinciding with meetings between President Trump and Venezuelan opposition leaders at the White House. The administration has adopted a hardline stance, declaring that it intends to control and manage Venezuela's oil industry to prevent revenues from reaching the current regime. While US officials describe the operation as a flawless execution of international law, the move effectively places the US military in a direct blockade role in the Caribbean. The Veronica and other seized vessels are being held as part of a strategy to redirect oil assets, though energy analysts remain skeptical about the feasibility of the US quickly revitalizing Venezuela’s hollowed-out oil sector.
